Netflix’s ‘Comedy Premium League’ Review: Critique on Lack of Humor Despite Star-studded Lineup

COMEDY PREMIUM LEAGUE

This review is about the “Comedy Premium League” Netflix special. Despite having 16 comedy performers, including well-known figures like Tanmay Bhat, Kanan Gill, Kenny Sebastian, and Sumukhi Suresh, it discusses the show’s lack of humor. The show, which features well-known comedians, is criticized in the review for failing to make the audience laugh out loud.

In this format, six episodes are presented by four teams whose names are associated with low-grade animals. A live studio audience scores their stand-up, sketches, debates, and presentations on a leaderboard. Each episode concludes with a “Punchlines” round in which the object is to settle scores at the bottom of the leaderboard. The review highlights a few humorous incidents that appeared out of the blue, such as a competitor misrepresenting facts during the “Nayi” segment and the camera crew laughing uncontrollably at the other team.

The article discusses a few funny incidents, including a traditional stand-up round where the team breaks the tradition by performing a play. It also mentions a sketch prepared by Kenny Sebastian as Miss Braganza, and how Mallika Dua reacts to her realization that her Russian accent isn’t working, leading her to start clapping loudly.

The review highlights that the main problem with “Comedy Premium League” is that it doesn’t make much people laugh, even in the rare instances when it does. There are two debate segments mentioned, but they are criticized for not being as funny as they could have been because they touch on serious subjects like China, COVID, and the US elections.

Every now and then the comedians’ individual acting styles come through, with Prashasti Singh standing out for her uniqueness. Alokpratap Raj’s popular opinion set, though, is criticized as being the weakest of the entire show. The review ends by saying that although the show finds it difficult to escape the formula of Indian comedy on television, it eventually succeeds in making a comeback.
